As Stuart Hood comments: It is difficult to convey to people to whom shots of workers are the routine images of television documentaries the impact of such pictures on audiences in the Thirties; as Grierson records, their appearance on the screen caused spontaneous applause from spectators used to the representation of workers in British feature films, in which, as Ralph Bond, a Communist member of the movement, has explained, 'when workers did appear ... 42 Grierson clearly saw the films of the Unit as instruments for 'consciousness-raising 011 a variety of social issues and he was particularly keen to make the working class visible to the rest of society.
53 There are obvious parallels between the aims and methods of Mass Observation and those of the Documentary Film Movement. We have already noted that Grierson was heavily influenced by the American sociologist, Walter Lippmann, whose early study of the media, Public Opinion (1924) argued that the 'ordinary citizen' in 'mass society' was increasingly unable to participate in decision making because he/she no longer had access to all the knowledge necessary to make informed decisions. In a mass society people's opinions were only elicited at election times and even then they were subject to the influence of specialist 'opinion makers' who controlled the apparatuses of 'opinion formation'.
44 The founders of Mass Observation were keen to develop an 'anthropology' of British customs and rituals by employing mainly voluntary observers in a 'mass science' of British life. As they wrote in a letter to the New Statesman, headed significantly Anthropology at Home': I Mass Observation does not set out in quest of truth or facts for their own sake, or for the sake of an intellectual minority, but aims at exposing them in simple terms to all observers, so that their environment Inay be understood, and thus constantly transformed.
