Semicolons are used to separate multiple declarations, and the format for the rule changed a bit. Although we could have listed all of the declarations on one line, it would have become difficult to read, so we kicked each declaration onto its own line and indented it. We ended the rule with a right curly brace, as all rules end, but it has its own line as well. This is the accepted code layout for complex rules that include several declarations. The code is easier to read because individual rules can be found and changed by simply scanning the list.

In its most generic form, an SGML document contains three primary parts: • A description of the legal character set and metacharacters used to distinguish plain text from markup (in HTML, this means the angle brackets used to bracket tags; and the special characters—ampersand— [&]—and semicolon—[;]—used to bracket entities) • A declaration of the DTD that governs the document, including a list of the legal markup it can contain • The document itself, which includes references to markup tags, mixed with the document’s actual content Where HTML is concerned, the first two items need not be present, but the version of the DTD that governs the document should be.

Once you have the concept fairly clear in your mind, the rest is merely assembling a few selectors and declarations into rules to suit your needs. Congratulations, you’re ready for syntax, the subject of the next chapter. html (3 of 4) [13/12/02 17:03:41] HTML Style Sheets Design Guide:HTML and Style Sheets: CSS Copyright © The Coriolis Group, Inc. html (4 of 4) [13/12/02 17:03:41] HTML Style Sheets Design Guide:The Syntax Of Styles HTML Style Sheets Design Guide by Natanya Pitts, Ed Tittel, and Stephen N.
