Terry Gilliam 39 television and film. So when he finally landed in England, he looked up the one English performer he knew, John Cleese, and asked if Cleese could point him in the right direction. Cleese introduced him to Humphrey Barclay, a television producer who was working at the time on a new children’s program called Do Not Adjust Your Set (1967–1969). When Gilliam finally worked his way into a meeting with Barclay, he figured the only way to break in would be as a writer, and so he took with him some written sketches.

Through this all, Gilliam has been honored with numerous awards and nominations, mainly for his work in live-action film as a director, producer and writer. In 1970, though, he did win a BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) for his animation work in the 1969 season of Monty Python. He has also turned from drawing to writing. In 1978 he authored the book Animations of Mortality, which featured artwork, sketches and text all looking 4. Terry Gilliam 45 into the mind of an animator. In 1996 the book was turned into an interactive CD-ROM complete with several new Gilliam-produced and -inspired animations and images.

The two sporadically traded letters back and forth until Gilliam’s graduation, when he wrote to inform Kurtzman of his intention to come to New York and work.
