A busy and forward-looking multidisciplinary health centre was fully functional by the time Prince Charles the Prince of Wales conducted the official opening of the building in 1972. He was impressed by early clinical audit activity. O. Williams who ran the RCGP epidemic observation unit from 1973. Both men, working from their own practices, made major contributions to the international development of the discipline of general practice and to primary health care. Another pioneer was Derek Llewellyn, the first regional adviser for Wales: he led the development of vocational training for general practitioners in Wales during the 1970s.

University-linked practices have been developed for clinical staff at Turloughmore, the Claddagh and Ballyvaughan together with a network of almost 100 teaching practices along the western seaboard. html). The department now has significant undergraduate teaching responsibilities in years one and four of the medical curriculum. Much emphasis was placed on developing postgraduate teaching and since 2001 a programme of higher Diploma, Masters and PhD in primary care has been available. This teaching did not become a formal part of the curriculum until 1983, in a second year course on environment, behaviour and health. In 1992, Jill Morrison led the introduction of a four-week attachment in general practice for final-year students, including problembased learning and an audit project.
