I was an elderly Lama living in tight quarters with a group of eight to ten monks in their teens and twenties, who were my students. We were in a small building amidst wintry night, with just oil lamps illuminating our simple abode. Our studies were interrupted by a small band of Chinese Red Army soldiers with bayoneted rifles. I advised my young charges to be submissive and play along with the soldiers, hoping that if we humored them, they would eventually get bored and leave. One of the soldiers handed his rifle to a robed student, and pantomimed that the student should stab one of his colleagues.

Including Joseph Goldstein and Sharon Salzberg, came to Nepal to study with my teacher, Tulku Urgyen. Standing, indeed rooted in the blessing of that time and that sacred place of the Buddha’s enlightenment, I found myself at the proverbial crossroads. To my dewy eyes, it seemed entirely possible to remain and practice in the East, and drop the life I had known until then, like a husk that had molted off my back.
