Psychoanalytic and Psychodynamic Section Psychoanalytic psychotherapists assume that patients' problems have their origins in childhood experiences. They place emphasis on the unconscious and within the therapeutic relationship work with clients to make the unconscious conscious through the use of free association, interpretation of dreams, transference and countertransference. In many ways their practice is similar to that of the analytical psychotherapists, only the latter work from a Jungian perspective and psychotherapists listed under this section employ mainly Freudian or Kleinian approaches.

However, an equal number welcomed what they saw as a more professional approach to accreditation. One of the dif®culties surrounding the old system was the reliance on volunteer input from assessors. The new system allows for dedicated staff to work closely together to agreed deadlines ensuring that all applications receive a more standardised assessment from a group of people trained and experienced in a variety of therapeutic approaches. Only time will tell what real advantages or disadvantages the new system will bring.

I value my accreditation for two reasons. On a personal level, as having been accredited on three separate occasions (my original application and then re-accredited twice since then), it has always felt rewarding to know that the client work I do has been externally validated. On a business level, accreditation has been instrumental in assisting me to build and promote my private practice and in securing part-time teaching work in the counselling world. After having talked to a number of colleagues, my experiences appear to be consistent with a number of others.
